Board of Directors

Artifice NYC is a 501(c)(3) curatorial research organization in New York, producing programs in creative science, installation, and new media performance. We are now seating the board that will govern it.

Since incorporating in 2024, Artifice has supported emerging artists through exhibitions, open laboratories, artist cohorts, public programs, and an archive that publishes work while it is still being made. The board moves Artifice from project-by-project production to an institution that can commit to an artist a year out and still be there to honor it.

The board decides what Artifice can promise, and what it has to be able to sustain.

Directors approve the annual budget, elect officers, oversee financial and legal compliance, and hold Artifice to its charitable purpose. They keep it independent, and check its ambitions against what it can staff and fund.

The board does not curate programs, select artists, or direct staff. It sets what the operating and curatorial teams work within, and carries the risk they cannot.

Directors serve two-year terms and meet quarterly, with written updates in between. The bylaws permit three to fifteen; we are building toward five to nine, a majority of them independent of the founder.

Artifice NYC is a curatorial research organization examining how knowledge is produced, presented, and preserved. Through WHITEBOX (a lab) and BLACKBOX (a stage), we support installations and performances from early testing through public presentation and documentation.

RADAR is an open field for submissions. ENTER follows selected work through editorial inquiry. The INDEX documents the artifacts.

• Treasurer

  Oversees the organization’s finances and financial controls.

  • The budget, and the reporting the board and funders need
  • Internal controls, and the annual filings that keep our exempt status
  • The financial picture a director needs before a vote

• Chair

  Presides over the board.

  • Sets the agenda and chairs the meetings
  • Holds directors to what they signed up for
  • Speaks for Artifice where staff cannot

• Secretary

  Maintains the corporate record and the filings that depend on it.

  • Minutes, and the register of who serves and for how long
  • Conflict-of-interest disclosures
  • What has to go to the state, and when

• Directors

  The general voting seats. Most of the board is made of these.

  • No officer title; each seat recruited for a single thing
  • Curatorial or field expertise, law, funders, or community
  • Bylaws permit three to fifteen; we are building toward five to nine

• Attendance at the large majority of meetings, with materials read beforehand
• Based in New York, and willing to come see the work in person
• Working knowledge of nonprofit governance and fiduciary duty, or the willingness to learn it quickly
• A connection to the work Artifice supports: emerging artists and researchers in creative science, installation, and performance
• Something beyond oversight: an introduction, a professional read, or a gift

Our bylaws ask each director to give or raise a minimum amount each year, set annually by the board. The board can reduce or waive it. Money is not what decides whether you can serve.

Backgrounds in nonprofit finance, accounting, audit, operations, law, philanthropy, real estate, or technology are all useful. Prior board service helps and is not required.
